Fourth-Grader's Idea Gets 1 Billion Trees Planted
In 2007, when Felix Finkbeiner was nine, he had to give a report on climate change. She also started the United Nations (UN) tree-planting program, the Billion Tree Campaign.
Felix was inspired. He told his classmates in Germany, " Let's plant a million trees in every country of the world!”. Two months after Felix first talked to his class, his tree-planting project Plant-for-the-Planet” , began.
Felix went to other schools and encouraged them to plant trees. News programs learned about Felix' s plan and covered the story. Plant — for — the — Planet used groups of young students around the world to spread the ideas further. That' s the new reality for many classrooms across Abu Dhabi, where a company is using artificial intelligence to create a new learning experience.
Built four years ago, Alef Education has managed to get its digital education platform into dozens of schools in Abu Dhabi. Alef has worked closely with the government of the United Arab Emirates to bring the platform to 25 ,000 students at 57 public schools.
The platform focuses on main subjects like math, science and English. It helps students by using artificial intelligence to design the curriculum to individual demands.
It also gives students, teachers and parents real-time feedback and adjusts accordingly. For students, that could mean a more personalized manner to help them better understand it. The platform can also find students' strengths.
“If a student does really well at science, why not pique their interest in what it's like to be a scientist or an astronaut?" he said. "That's our future goal, to use really all of that data and AI to create the individual learning path. ” But there are concerns that using the technology could come at a cost, such as increasing the amount of time children spend in front of screens.
Alphonso said his program would solve this issue by limiting screen time to 3.5 hours a day. The classes are followed by practical activities in which children interact with one another and use their hands for experiments.
