I have been teaching a personal finance (财务) class at Sultan High School for about 12 years. And I really think it should be a required class. The feedback (反馈) of my students has been very positive. I often hear from them, “Of all the classes I took in high school, your class is the only one that I have used in the real world.” While I know this is not true, it is easy to see the direct connection between personal finance and their lives.

However, what's disappointing (令人失望的) to me is that I only have 60 students this year out of 500 in our high school. A lot of students have expressed their interest. But they tell me they have so many required classes that they have little room in their schedules (时间表). They have four years of English. They have three years each of math, science, and social studies. They have two years of arts, PE and world language. There just isn't much room.

But still I say it is worth considering adding personal finance as a requirement. What we are teaching at school should be useful for our students' future. Time always changes, and money is playing a more important role in today's world. If our kids don't learn how to manage money, how can they manage their future life well?

Of course, personal finance is not among the most important subjects students have to spend years to learn, such as English and math. But I think my class has as much importance as some other required classes. PE teachers may ask you to spend more time in training “because it is good for your health”. Similarly, I would say knowing how to manage your money will help you achieve a more successful life.

Our kids have been required to take too many classes. There shouldn't be more school time. But it is quite possible to add a requirement while cutting the time of some other subjects.
