【原文】Thank you, Professor McBride. I’m glad to be back at the drama school after all these years. I want to talk about the value of hard work. You know, it wasn’t too long ago that I was a young actress trying to make it in this business. After high school, I started out in Los Angeles trying to get small roles in commercials. I was so tired from working nights at a diner that I would barely remember my lines every morning. But I kept showing up because I wanted to be an actress. I got a few jobs here and there, enough to pay the bills but never enough to live comfortably. All the big roles I wanted on TV shows like The Movers went to actresses who looked like beauty queens. I was tall and tough, but I didn’t look like a movie star. My parents encouraged me to study theatre in New York City. I met Professor Jeffries here, and he changed my whole view of acting. I started trying out for roles in local plays that were usually reserved for men. It wasn’t easy living here, but I never gave up. Finally, my big break came during my last year in school. The writer and director Lin-Manuel Miranda saw me perform in Chicago Business, a short play I had written. He invited me to try out for his new musical Hamilton. I got the part and the rest is history! Don’t ever give up on your dreams, but more importantly, don’t ever stop working hard for them.
